ALASKAN MALAMUTE BREED INFORMATION

The Alaskan Malamute is the largest member of the Spitz breeds, a heavy freighting sled dog, sturdy, intelligent and of great endurance. Developed over many generations by the Mahlemut Inuit (a native tribe of the Alaskan and arctic fringes) as an all purpose dog to haul heavy draft on sleds in winter, carry freight in backpacks in warmer months as well as hunting polar bear. Height range is 23-28 inches at the shoulder with bitches being at the lower end of the scale with body and bone being in direct proportion to this. Adult dogs can weigh well in excess of 56kg. The Malamutes thick double coat is relatively maintenance free apart from its annual moult when regular grooming is necessary and on the plus side does not present problems for allergy sufferers. The coat like most Spitz breeds is generally considered odourless. Being powerful, energetic sled dogs, Malamutes do require plenty of exercise with a minimum of at least one hours’ brisk walk on the lead each day. Due to their heritage, the Malamute is not a dog for the faint hearted or weak of purpose. Although friendly and affectionate, often to the extreme, Malamutes are also very dominant and can be quite a handful if not properly socialized due to their phenomenal strength. Socialisation from puppy hood is therefore essential. Malamutes require gentle, consistent and firm training, but never harsh treatment to which they will respond adversely. They should never be allowed off the lead as due to their nature will not return on command, they have no road sense, and males are not accommodating with other dogs, particularly dogs of the same sex. When confronted by a canine challenge, the response may be fast and furious. Malamutes are able hunters and executioners of small game, including cats; and, if allowed to run loose, can be deadly to livestock. An owner must be prepared to deal with this wild streak if he plans to bring a Mal into the home. As predominantly a "pack" animal they are not suited to a solitary existence, thriving on integration with humans as part of the family and/or other canine companions of the opposite sex. A solitary life without either of these will be to the detriment of both temperament and behaviour. Despite their good nature to humans Malamutes are not the easiest of breeds and not recommended for the novice dog owner. However due to their character, intelligence & affectionate disposition, Malamutes do make fantastic companions for those who are ready for the challenge & commitment of this most majestic, powerful & dignified breed.
